Sports organizations are just one of the entities that benefit from poker machine profits. So, while the potential of a decrease in pokies across New Zealand could bear negative consequences for sports clubs, the new Harm Reduction Bill aims to protect them. According to the bill’s author, MP Te Ururoa Flavell, sports clubs have started spreading rumours about the bill.

They have claimed that sports organizations will not be allowed to apply for funding derived from poker machine profits, but that is simply not the case. The Harm Reduction Bill will give local city councillors the right to decide how many poker machines should operator in their jurisdictions.

While this will certainly reduce the number of poker machines (and thus, profits) across the country, the bill also aims to increase the amount of funding that is awarded to local community organizations. In the end, the bill aims to ensure that local clubs, organizations and charities continue to receive the same amount of money from pokies. Unfortunately, clubs do not seem to see it this way.

Rather, they have been misinformed and continue to spread rumours about the bill. Flavell hopes to put these rumours to rest before seeking out more support for the bill.
