The Australian government has announced its plans to launch an investigation to determine the role that smart phones have played in the development of the online gambling market. The review will be conducted by the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE), and will take into consideration the online gambling industry both in Australia and abroad.
Recently, Victoria Premier Jeff Kennett made the observation that online betting is advancing at such a rapid rate that it could displace land-based gambling. As such, the Australian government wishes to fully understand the online gambling market and its future – which seems to lie in mobile gambling. “These betting shops, which allow you to wager on every conceivable competition, have no boundaries", Kennett says.
"They use events conducted anywhere in the world, and can be accessed by phone or the internet from anywhere in the world". The study will examine the current technology used to run online betting websites. Additionally, the DBEDE will also investigate regulatory models from around the world, determine their cost and effectiveness.
The investigation would lead to the legalization of online gambling in Australia, but only time will tell whether or not the government thinks it would be a worthwhile endeavor.
