The Gillard government has made plenty of excuses for refusing to begin the poker machine reform trial, and The Greens’ lack of support is the government’s latest scapegoat. MP Andrew Wikie is getting sick of it, and is pleading with The Greens to finally back the reform.

The Greens want to see a reduction in problem gambling rates; however, they believe that introducing $1 betting limits is more effective than mandatory pre-commitment, which requires players to set a limit on how much they can afford to spend before playing. While the plan is commendable, it is currently a cause for delay in the introduction of the pre-commitment trial. ‘‘I think the pressure’s really on the Greens now,” says Wilkie.

“Unless they’re prepared to give a bit of ground and compromise, I fear that the reforms are not going to see the light of day and we’ll miss this historic opportunity.” The Greens have yet to respond to Wilkie’s plea. It is likely that they are planning their course of action – however, they should note that no reforms will take place if they continue to hesitate.
