Betting operators around the world made a killing at this year’s World Cup tournament. New Zealand’s TAB is one such operator, having made record-breaking sales thanks to wagers from players across the country. According to Scoop, the World Cup helped to bring in $2 billion in wagers for the New Zealand TAB. This is the first time in the betting operator’s history to meet this milestone.
During the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, New Zealand punters wagered $32 million on matches with $2 million being wagered on the final between Argentina and Germany. “There are not many companies in New Zealand that turn over more than $2 billion,” says Acting CEO of the New Zealand Racing Board, Stewart McRobie. “It reflects the combined efforts of our associated industries and staff and is something we are immensely proud of.”
To put things in perspective, this spending far exceeds wagers placed on the Rugby World Cup in 2011. At that time, players wagered $30 billion on rugby matches. While you would normally think that rugby would generate more betting activity in Australia, it is important to consider the huge growth that has been experienced in the betting market in the past three years.
There are simply more player who are spending more money, so we can expect big numbers during the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The New Zealand TAB will be sending some of its earnings away for good causes. The betting operator will provide $560 000 in funding to New Zealand Football, the country’s local governing body for the sport.
“These funds will allow us to continue to support the structures we have in place as we seek to raise the importance of football in the New Zealand sporting landscape,” says CEO Andy Martin.
