The China Australia Entrepreneurs Association Incorporated (CAEAI) is currently in the process of exploring potential locations for a casino in the Whitsundays. Since the Queensland government plans on handing out five new regional casino licenses, Whitsunday could prove to be an ideal location for a new gambling venue in the state.
This week, Macau’s Zelong Group from Macau signed a deal with the CAEAI which will see them partner up to bid for a Queensland casino license. According to association president Raymond Wang, Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach are just two of five sites that are being considered for a new casino in Whitsunday. It was also speculated that Lagunas Quay would be potential location for a casino, but local councils have denied this.
“They've seen sites that would work for them, but those discussions with council would need to continue,” says Whitsunday Mayor Jennifer Whitney. Last year, Queensland politicians announced that they will be handing out new casino licenses for locations across the state.
Any operations that wish to apply for a license must ensure that the casino is part of an integrated resort property that will not only rely on gambling revenue to generate profits. The closest casino to the Whitsundays region is Jupiters Casino in Townsville, which is over 250km away. By building a new casino in the area, Whitsunday could enhance its draw as a tourist destination in Australia.
Mayor Whitney is excited about the possibility of building a casino in the area. She believes that there are plenty of great business opportunities available, and the local economy could thrive thanks to increased tourism. The city has yet to apply, but it could certainly be a contender for one of Queensland’s new casino licenses.
