Nine gaming clubs across Australia will receive $15 000 to explore the possibility of redeveloping their sites for residential purposes. The grants are part of the new Small Club Site Redevelopment Support Scheme, allowing club owners to consider developing housing on the unused parts of their property.
"In discussions with the clubs sector the Government learned some small clubs wish to diversify their income away from gaming machine revenue, but have found the cost of exploring development options prohibitive," says Joy Burch, ACT Minister for Gaming and Racing. Burch also hopes that the program will create more affordable housing options for families across the ACT.
In a tough economic climate, the need for housing is paramount, and this redevelopment scheme may provide a much-needed boost to the housing market. It also presents a boon to the economy by allowing small club owners to expand their businesses.
The clubs that receive the grants will not be required to begin the redevelopment process. The grants have been provided so that club owners can determine the feasibility of expanding to offer residential opportunities for ACT residents.
