Casa D'Abruzzo Club in Whittlesea has been allowed to install 15 new poker machines on its premises. The club originally owned and operated 60 pokies, and the additional games will bring the total up to 75. Whittlesea Council made no objections to the club’s application; however, it has requested that the club must meet certain conditions.
As problem gambling become increasingly prevalent throughout Australia, the council wants to ensure that the new poker machines "would not result in a net economic and social detriment to the community of the municipal district". After careful examination, it was deemed that the club would be able to hold up its end of the bargain.
While this seems like a tall order, it is simply up to the club owner and operator to take responsibility for the potential impact of the new games. Employees should be trained to deal with problem gamblers effectively, cutting them off and offer them services that may be of assistance.
It is a responsibility that few club owners have yet to take on, but Whittlesea wants to see Casa D'Abruzzo Club taking the first step and setting a positive example for its peers.
